November 2000 class of 20 year one children

Working on discussion and context drama through hot seating after reading The Golden Cage.

During the hot seating the teacher went into the role of Abigail who wanted to cage a wild Song Thrush so she could hear it sing whenever she liked, the children asked the following questions:

The Golden Cage

"Why did you keep shouting at the bird?"

"Why did you want to catch and keep the bird and then shout at him?"

"Why didn't you buy one from the pet shop?"

The teacher told the children she wanted the bird because she was lonely and wanted a friend.

"Are you frightened to pick up worms? He might get hungry, you can soon do whatever you want anyway. You could get a husband or a boyfriend."

"Why not put two thrushes together so they could talk and sing. Why is it cruel, because you can keep parrots and budgies in cages?"

"I've got a parrot and when the doors were open he walked outside. Why didn't he fly away?"

"But all they know about is cages and they are used to it. They like being in cages."

"I think he wanted a bird toy to chew."

"If you had lots of toys in a big cage with him he might sing to them."

"Why do you want others? You could play on your own."

"Why don't your mum and dad get a baby for you to play with?"
