Report on Robert Napier Able & Talented Summer School

30th July – 3rd August

It was the first time that a summer school had been arranged to support Gifted and Talented pupils from primary schools who are transferring into Year 7 at the Robert Napier School.

In total 20 children took part in the summer school, which was based on a humanities theme.  It was a busy week, with different activities planned for every day.

Icebreaking activities on the first day included games and a shoe-making competition using recycled materials.  The children participated well and even the staff became very competitive with the shoe-making activity.

Those who don’t like spiders would not have enjoyed the bug hunting session at the Arethusa Centre.  In the afternoon the children were encouraged to shake trees after placing a cloth underneath to collect bugs and then to identify them from a nature chart.

On Day 2 the children became historians at the Riverside Country Park and also investigated the geography of the area.  They returned to school where they then created both a model of a medieval village and town.

The children enjoyed orienteering through the grounds of Capstone Country Park on Day 3.  They were split into three groups and were briefed on the routes they needed to follow.  The orienteering exercise proved popular and was enjoyed by all taking part.

A whole day was spent back at the Arethusa Centre trying a variety of activities which included archery, canoeing and raft building.  For the raft building activity, the children were given four plastic barrels, eight poles and some nylon rope to build a raft which would hold them all for a short journey along the river.  The rafting proved to be a huge hit with all.

At the end of the summer school the parents were invited to see what their children had been doing through photographs, pieces of writing and drawings.  The children received certificates and medals for their parts in a very successful week and went away with added skills and happy memories.

We’d like to thank the three teachers, two Aimhigher Learning Mentors, and two 6th form students who helped out every day.  In addition, two other members of staff helped with transport and the orienteering exercise.
