The
gifted and talented programme targeted pupils from Medway Excellence Cluster
schools who were identified as having a particular ability, aptitude or talent. Following the Government guidelines, each primary and
secondary school identified 5 – 10% of each year group from Years
1 to 11 and 2 - 20% of students in Years 12 and 13 as their cohort of more
able and talented pupils. These cohorts were regularly reviewed. The
identified pupils were offered opportunities for enrichment, challenge
and extended learning through activities organised by the Medway
Excellence Cluster as well as additional support and challenge through
their curriculum at school.
During the Cluster's existence our able and talented pupils have taken part
in a variety of exciting activities arranged
through the Excellence Cluster. School
news provides
information about other able and talented activities which have been organised in our schools.
Each school has a coordinator who is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the programme in their school. Since the start of the Cluster, the majority of our school coordinators have attended the 5-day National Gifted and Talented Coordinator training run by Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes University. Regular meetings for the G&T coordinators were also held within the Medway Excellence Cluster along with two conferences per year. These occasions focus on the latest information and resources from the Government and other sources, provide opportunities for sharing of good practice as well as planning future programmes of activities. The school coordinators have agreed that they will continue to meet informally to share ideas and information after the Cluster has ended.
