In January 2005 a partnership of 21 schools in Gillingham and Chatham was established as the Medway Excellence Cluster Partnership (MECP). Sadly, on 31 March 2008, the Cluster comes to an end.
The Cluster has built upon the work and achievements of the Education Action Zone (EAZ/Gillingham Partnership) in previous years, and has worked to support schools in raising levels of attainment, extending opportunities and tackling behaviour and attendance through the provision of a structured programme of initiatives. These initiatives have included:
• Access to full time Learning Mentors for pupils who need them
• Counselling and Learning Support Units to support children with particular problems or difficulties
• Extended opportunities for more able and talented pupils
• Language Enrichment Programmes and Basic Skills in our Primary Schools
• Developing a Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Programme within our two secondary schools.
• Other Initiatives through the Behaviour Improvement Programme (BIP)
When asked about the benefits of being part of the MECP, Jane Heyes, Headteacher of Brompton Westbrook Primary School explained:
‘The Excellence Cluster builds on all the best aspects of the former Gillingham Partnership Education Action Zone and it is easy to see how the activities have a direct impact on the lives of children and families. The support for the emotional and social needs of our children has been especially significant and the projects to enrich the curriculum have brought about some exciting opportunities for children’
