Medway Excellence Cluster - Aiming for Excellence

A report on past Training June/July 2007

Learning Mentors attend Children’s Workforce Development CWDC training in June/July 2007

The CWDC produced new induction training for Children’s Services workers in line with the Common Induction Standards for the Children’s Workforce Initiative. In June and July, Kath Chesterman (Medway Excellence Cluster and BIP manager) and Peter Hobbs (Gravesham Excellence Cluster Mentor Coordinator) facilitated this training to a group of 20 learning mentors.

The training took place over six days; the first four days were based on core competencies for working in Children’s Services and covered the five modules shown below.

Module 1- Principles, values and legislation
Module 2- Understanding children and young people’s development
Module 3- Building relationships, communicating with children, young people and families
Module 4- Keeping children and young people safe from harm
Module 5- Integrated working

The last two days were based upon two role specific modules for learning mentors.

Module A- Facilitating children and young people’s development through mentoring
Module B- The extended role of the learning mentor

A short evaluation of the training was conducted by Jemma Gardner (Medway Excellence Cluster project evaluator). The trainees were asked to complete two questionnaires: one concerning the core competencies and the other the role specific modules. The questionnaires asked participants how useful they found each of the themes within the training, the impact the training will have upon their work and any changes they would like to see made.

Overall the training was received well and perceived to be very valuable. Participant’s highlighted the useful and worthwhile areas from each module and theme and suggested they found the coverage of topics effective. Each of the participants felt they had gained a greater understanding of the role of a learning mentor and were grateful for receiving this training.

We hope the training received will be beneficial to the practice of the learning mentors and wish them the best of luck in the completion of their portfolios.
