Medway Excellence Cluster - Aiming for Excellence

Emotional Literacy

‘Emotional literacy is the ability to understand ourselves and others and to be aware of, understand and to use information about the emotional states of others with competence. It includes the ability to understand, express and manage our own emotions, and respond to the emotions of others, in ways that are helpful to ourselves and others’
Developing the Emotionally Literate School

(Weare, 2004)

The Robert Napier School (RNS) and New Brompton College (NBC) have both established emotional literacy projects within their schools. NBC has developed a whole-school approach aimed at promoting social and emotional well-being, which, as national evidence and research suggests, is the most effective and sustainable way of raising standards and tackling barriers to learning.

RNS has developed a programme where they work initially with the staff of their English department and their form groups to pilot and embed the principles of emotional literacy.  From this beginning, there are plans to spread the principles of emotional literacy across the rest of the staff and pupils in the school.
